Garba
Song- nagada [ramleela]
Garba dance is a popular folk dance of Gujarat. It is a circular form of dance performed by Indian ladies on the Navratri days, Sharad Purnima, Vasant Panchmi, Holi and other occasions. The basics of the dance are singing and clapping rhythmically while going round the goddess.
Garba is the leading dance of women in Gujarat. The Garba dance is performed throughout the 9 nights. The actual performance begins at night after the women finish their household work, and they all gather at street corners.
Women folk come out into the open, and with perforated earthen pots holding lighted lamps poised on their heads, singing, clapping. Garba songs are mostly in praise of Mother Goddess Amba. The rhythm is kept by a dholi or a drummer who sits in the centre.
The costumes and the instruments used during the folk dances are also typical folk costumes which mostly consist of a short coat called kedia with tight sleeves, embroidered borders, and shoulders, tight trousers like chudidars and coloured turbans.
Ballroom dance
Song – perfect [Ed Sheeran]
It is a typical type of social dancing, originally practiced by Europe in the United States, that is performed by couples and follows prescribed steps. The tradition was historically distinguished from folk by its association with elite social classes and with invitational dance events. In the 21st century however, ballroom dance is prevalent in many parts of the world and has practioners in virtually all segments of society. It is performed in various contexts, including invitational and public dance events, professional dance exhibitions and formal competitions.
Standard ballroom dance includes the waltz and the polka from the 19th century and the tango, among others from the 20th century. Other popular dances, such as the Charleston , swing dancing, mambo, twist and disco dancing have also visited the ballroom repertoire at various points in the traditions history. Owing to the social and stylistic breadth of the ballroom tradition, the term ballroom dance has been loosely applied to all forms of social and popular dancing.
Salsa
Song – despacito [justin beiber]
This dance form is an example of a partnered dance. In classes a choreographed sequence is generally taught, but in practice it is an improvised dance.
Salsa is the collective term used to describe a variety of dances from various Hispanic sources. The diversity of styles that exist are such that dancers often ally themselves to one style to the exclusion of all others.
It is generally danced on six beats in every eight. This means that on the fourth and eighth beat no step is taken, which gives the dance a staccato like form.
All this gives a clear image of salsa as an international dance which exploded far beyond its “Carribean” borders. Top bands nowadays come from Puerto Rico as well as from Japan, Senegal, France and even Finland. Salsa competitions are won by western and even Asian. This is just a widespread development of any form of art.
Quite rapidly salsa spread to central and South America mostly in countries facing the Carribean sea and as always happens with any form of art and expression of human cultureit differentiated itself in many at least slightly different forms especially in the Netherlands where it spread as an alternative dance form.
Street Jazz
Song – That’s what I like [Bruno Mars]
Dutch Jazz Musicians had reflected Americans before the war and this continued to varying degrees until the late 1950s. In the 1970s jazz gained acceptance in Amsterdam. Since then many jazz musicians choose the Netherlands as a place to study or settle.
Over time, a clearly defined jazz genre emerged, changing from a street dance to a theatrical dance performed on stage by professionals. Some scholars and dancers, especially Swing and Lindy Hop dancers, still regard the term jazz dance. It is a genre which has produced specific styles from famous choreographers such as Bob Fosse, Jack Cole and Katherine Dunham. Jazz dancers can refer to these specific styles or allude to theatrical or character dance. However, the style continues to adapt and is commonly seen on dance competition stages being performed in a very sassy manner with a lot of attitude. Some people think Jazz Dance produced Modern Jazz, but really, Modern Dance came more as a response against Ballet. Two main branches of Modern dance were pioneered through Martha Graham and Isadora Duncan.
Jazz dance is now completed and performed throughout North America and many other countries across the world. There are many different stylistic preferences seen in jazz, such as a slow or fast pace, approach, and even music. Jazz dancing can be very well performed to any style of music.
Bhangra
The term bhangra originally designated a particular dance performed by Sikh and Muslim men in the farming districts of the Punjab region of south Asia . The dance was primarily associated with the spring harvest festival of Baisakhi and it is a from one of the major products of the harvest – bhang[hemp] that bhangra drew its name. In a typical performance, several dancers executed vigorous kicks, leaps, and bends of the body to the accompaniment of short songs called boliyan and most significantly, to the beat of a double headed drum.
In the mid 20th century, the dance began to gain popularity beyond Punjab and as it did so, it became divorced from the agricultural cycle, emerging as a regular feature of wedding festivities, birthday parties, local fairs and other celebrations.
